Whenever we put up information on alternative treatments that have not been properly/Scientifically tested, we receive a few angry emails.
They say" we are trying to prevent people with cancer from getting effective treatment".
That is really not what we wish to do.
What concerns us is that potential treatments, like these on this page, are often sold for a great deal of money. And people with cancer can be vulnerable. It is understandable that patients or relatives will try anything if they think it might work. And that people really do want to believe that they work. But some alternative 'therapies' are just money making businesses targeting people who are sick and very vulnerable.

Vitamin E for Extra Protection

Wheat germ, almonds and sunflower seeds: Sure, they're crunchy and delicious, great on yogurt or hot cereal, but they also provide healthy amounts of yet another nutrient that may help protect against cancer--vitamin E.

Studies using experimental animals have consistently shown that vitamin E can help protect cells from damage that can lead to cancer. "Population studies have had mixed findings, however, probably because most people don't get enough vitamin E from foods to get much cancer protection," Dr. Quillin says. More recently, population studies that have also looked at long-term intake from vitamin E supplements have found protective effects.

In the Iowa Women's Health Study, for instance, researchers found that women who developed colon cancer consumed the smallest amounts of vitamin E, averaging less than 36 international units a day. Women who got almost twice that much of the vitamin--about 66 international units from supplements--had only one-third of the risk of developing this cancer compared with those with low intakes.

Another study, by researchers at the National Cancer Institute in Rockville, Maryland, found that people who said they regularly used vitamin Esupplements had half of the normal risk of oral cancer of people who did not take vitamin E supplements.

Studies that have looked at blood levels of vitamin Ehave also found evidence of protective effects. British researchers, for example, found that women who had the highest blood levels of vitamin Ehad only one-fifth of the risk of breast cancer compared with women who had the lowest blood levels of vitamin E.

"Like vitamin C, vitamin E has the ability to protect biological molecules from the kind of chemically induced damage that can lead to cancer," Dr. Frei says. "Because it is fat-soluble itself, vitamin E is particularly good at protecting fatty cell membranes from oxidative damage."

"Strong cell membranes may be particularly important in the colon, because the bacteria there produce a lot of free radicals, the unstable molecules believed to harm DNA and promote tumor growth," adds Roberd Bostick, M.D., assistant professor of epidemiology at Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and co-investigator of the Iowa Women's Health Study.

Vitamin E may also stimulate and enhance the immune system so that it attacks budding cancer cells and inhibits the production of nitrosamines, Dr. Bostick says.

Based on its possible protective effects against some types of cancer, a growing number of researchers believe that vitamin Emay prove to be a key player in any cancer prevention plan. Many recommend 400 to 600 international units a day. Such large amounts are impossible to get through dietary sources alone. Even a diet that contains good sources, such as wheat germ and safflower oil, provides only about 30 to 40 international units of vitamin E a day. "Only supplements can provide these large amounts," Dr. Quillin notes.

Vitamin E Has Potential To Prevent Certain Cancers
—One of the Most Promising Agents Studied So Far—

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NEW YORK, January 27, 2005 — "Vitamin E supplementation may have a profound effect on reducing the burden of several major cancers," said Mark Moyad, M.D., M.P.H. He told a group of reporters here today that not only may vitamin E reduce an individual’s risk of getting certain cancers, but it may also reduce the risk of dying from those diseases.

The prostate cancer expert spoke at a health and science writers’ workshop on vitamin E and health at the New York Academy of Sciences sponsored by the Council for Responsible Nutrition. Dr. Moyad is the Phil F. Jenkins Director of Preventive & Alternative Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical Center (Department of Urology).

He told the writers, "Cancer has now surpassed heart disease as the number one cause of mortality. Therefore, it is imperative that more basic science and clinical research is not only funded but also initiated on potential cancer prevention agents, or on agents that slow the progression of existing cancer. The National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society estimate that there will be over 63,000 new cases of bladder
cancer (the fourth most common cancer), and that over 13,000 individuals will die from this disease in 2005. Interestingly, several large epidemiologic studies have demonstrated
that long-term use of vitamin E supplements may reduce the risk of bladder cancer."

Dr. Moyad said that many researchers were surprised in 1998 when the results of the ATBC trial, or Alpha-Tocopherol (vitamin E) Beta-Carotene Trial, were published. This trial, completed in Finland with over 29,000 men, found that vitamin E reduced the risk of prostate cancer by 32% and deaths from prostate cancer by 41% compared to placebo. Because of that and several other studies, the National Cancer Institute decided to fund the SELECT Trial, which includes approximately 32,000 men on vitamin E (400 IU), selenium (200 mcg), the combination, or placebo for 7-12 years. Although this trial began only a few years ago, recruitment has actually completed several years early, making it one of the fastest trials filled to capacity in the history of this country.

"The potential for vitamin E, or vitamin E in combination with other agents, to reduce the risk of several of leading cancer killers is indeed interesting," Dr. Moyad told the group. "In fact, the results of the SUVIMAX French randomized study were published in the past several weeks. In healthy men taking a combination supplement that included vitamin E versus others who took placebo, the seven and a half year study showed not only a reduction in total cancer risk, but also a reduction in overall mortality."

Dr. Moyad concluded, "Because of its low cost and the ease with which it can be purchased, vitamin E has to be one of the most potentially effective cancer prevention agents studied to date."

Cancer cells hide after Chemotherapy and Radiation

After the initial doses of radiation and/or chemotherapy, cancer cells start hiding.
" They develop a slime coating, and they become like Stealth bombers, and they can hide from future doses of radiation and chemotherapy. This is why repeated dose of radiation and chemotherapy become less effective".Dr. John Maras, Nu-Gen Educational Library.

" The way to get rid of this "slime coating" is to use large doses of plant and animal enzymes- especially bromelain and pancreatin. This allows an 'access point' for the immune system to attack the cancer cells".....Dr. John Maras, Nu-Gen Educational Library
